Sons of God
Sons of God is a fascinating study in and of itself. Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. Is one of those verses that launched a myriad of speculation and controversy. Luke however sets the stage. Luk 3:38 ... Adam, which was the son of God. The author to the Hebrews adds clarity. Heb 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? So there is a physical sonship - of flesh, and one of spirit made in the image of God - who is Spirit (John 4:24) The Torah is quite emphatic. Exo 4:22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: And Deu 14:1 “You [are] sons of your God YHWH; [LSV] Where those want to an inconsistent definition of the sons of God tried to muddy the waters was insisting that the expression bene elohim "sons of God" is not the same meaning as Deu 14:1 Ye are the children of the LORD your God: However the dead sea scrolls help. Deu 32:8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. Is in the older text Deu 32:8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. [ESV] Now the peddlers of confusion don't give up, but in order to muddy the waters and make the sons of God angels they must suggest these two variant readings are saying different things. However a consistent reading of the sons of God as those descended from Adam means that to say the children of Israel is to say the sons of God, as and more importantly that the children of Israel are God's first born son. Yes this is a variant reading - but the meaning is not fundamentally changed by exchanging sons of God for children of Israel. This concept of birth right is key - and lets read on. Deu 32:8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. Deu 32:9 But the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage. [ESV] YLT adds clarity Deu 32:9 For Jehovah's portion is His people, Jacob is the line of His inheritance. Moses is asserting that Isreal is not only of the sons of God, the line of Adam by Seth - but also that Israel is the chosen of God because Jacob has "birth right" ie is counted as the Firstborn son - as God told Moses to tell Pharaoh; Jacob is the line of inheritance from Adam - the son of God,through his descendants, Seth, down to Jacob - being "firstborn" sons = the line of His inheritance. From God the Father through his chosen firstborn sons to Israel. So we do have in scripture men being spoken of in Hebrew as bene elohim - because God is not the author of confusion, but the father of spirits, - those he created in his image, and the firstborn son of these is Israel, from whom the Messiah would come. The whole purpose is also spoken of in Hebrews. Heb 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
